Additional Resources/Activities
LIIDP has many other resources available to parents of children in our program, as well as to parents in the community. We strive to provide parents with current, accessible information on a variety of child development topics.
The New York State Education Department (NYSED), Office of Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID) oversees a statewide preschool special education program with school districts, municipalities, approved providers and parents. Evaluations and specially planned individual or group instructional services or programs are provided at no cost to eligible children who have a disability that affects their learning.
Some of our additional resources/activities include:
Toy Lending Library
LIIDP has many developmentally appropriate toys that parents may borrow for one month at a time.
Parent Library
LIIDP has an extensive reference library that includes books on a variety of topics, available for parents to borrow. If a parent is unable to come in to borrow a book, a staff member may take out a book for you. Books are to be returned to the library when they are finished.
Transition Training (LIIDP hosts for the Nassau Early Childhood Direction Center)
This is an informational session presented by the Nassau County Early Childhood Direction Center to provide parents with information on the necessary steps with regard to moving from the Early Intervention Program into the Preschool Special Education Program. This is held in our Merrick facility.
Graduation
Each year, LIIDP holds a ceremony to recognize children as they transition from our program to preschool or school-age program, which includes distribution of a graduation certificate. This ceremony is held during Family Fun Day.
Family Fun Day
LIIDP hosts an annual Family Fun Day in a local park for the families and staff from the program. The graduation ceremony is held during Family Fun Day.
Speakers Bureau
LIIDP’s professionals have been speaking to the community in various settings for many years. Karen Farrell of the Freeport Library says, ”LIIDP is a tremendous asset to the community. Their speakers are extremely professional and knowledgeable.” Our staff is available to speak to parents or community groups on topics such as nutrition, managing challenging behaviors, speech/language development, positive discipline, bilingual issues, toilet training and typical infant and toddler development. Informational handouts are distributed after each speaking engagement.
